Project RISE—Resilience in a Struggling Era:
Transnational Chinese Families in the Pandemic
The COVID-19 pandemic has presented many challenges for the transnational Chinese communities in the United States. Government agencies and NGOs have documented a soaring number of anti-Asian hate crimes. Families are also confronted with restrictions on international travel putting on hold the hopes for families to reunite, the challenges of providing their children with stable economic income in an era of inflation, mitigating the spread of COVID-19, and supporting their children when their in-person schooling is disrupted.
Project RISE explores the lived experiences of Chinese transnational families during the COVID-19 pandemic, their challenges, and coping strategies. It is designed to respond to these challenges in the domains of education & mental health, amplify the diverse voices of transnational Chinese children, youths, and families, and raise the public’s awareness of anti-Asian racism. This project is a collaborative and critical ethnographic study conducted by an interdisciplinary research team from the University of Florida and Lesley University. Since the start of the project in 2020, our research team has been conducting interviews, and observations, collecting artifacts, and creating opportunities for community engagement. The findings of the study are used to generate academic resources, effective approaches, and programs to support the well-being and education of transnational Chinese children and families. We are currently focusing on recruitment and data collection efforts in the greater Boston area and in the state of Florida.
Project RISE is funded by the Racial Equity Grant from the Spencer Foundation and the Research Incentive Fund from the College of Education at the University of Florida.
